JBEL Student-Faculty Research Collaboration Grant
Overview
The Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences is committed to supporting faculty's engagement of students in research and scholarship. The Dean and Research and Scholarship Council (RSC) are offering funds to support collaborative research between faculty and a graduate and/or undergraduate student. The Student-Faculty Research Collaboration (SFRC) grant is intended to promote an in-depth research experience for the student participating in the research project, rather than provide funding for general research assistance. Projects where the student plays a significant role in the execution of the research will be considered. The expectation is that work funded through this research grant will be undertaken during the 2024-2025 academic year. Proposals submitted will be evaluated by the RSC. One grant of up to $4,000 will be awarded.
Funding
This call is meant to support research efforts during the 2024-2025 academic year. These SFRC grant funds are intended to be used in the form of student support via pay for work/time spent working on the project or travel related to the proposed research (e.g., cost to attend a conference and present research findings); however, a portion can be used to directly support the research project if it is essential to conducting the research. For this call, the maximum total award available is $4,000.
Budget
Awards cover budget requests for student pay, student travel, or essential project-related supplies. Students will be paid as research assistants. Mentors should use the criteria determined by student employment to determine the appropriate pay level for research assistants.
- The review committee may suggest a reduced/revised budget. The applicant can appeal the committee’s decision to the RSC Chair.
- If an extension for unused funds is required at the end of the funding period, faculty must contact the RSC for an extension by April 1st, 2025. Funds may be extended if there is a legitimate research purpose.
Eligibility
To be eligible to receive a SFRC grant, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Applicants must be resident full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty or a faculty member with research designation in their position responsibilities in the Helen and Arthur E Johnson Bethel College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
- Faculty may submit only one SFRC grant proposal per year, either as principal investigator or as co-principal investigator.
- Requests are limited to a maximum budget of $4,000.
- Proposals must be submitted as a single pdf file by the faculty member via email to RSC@UCCS.edu by the application deadline of April 8th, 2024.
Proposals must clearly detail plans for identifying and engaging the student researcher.
Proposal Format
The proposal should contain the following sections, with the specified length restrictions.
1. Cover Page/Application (1-page; attached below)
The cover page is provided in a standard format and is included as the last page in this document.
2. Description of Proposed Research Project (1,000-word-limit, including figures and tables)
Provide a description of the research project to be accomplished. The project description must be intelligible to readers in other disciplines.
3. Bibliography (limit to a max of 15 references)
Include a bibliography for references cited in the description in section II.
4. Plans for Identifying and Engaging Student Researcher (500-word-limit)
Clearly describe how a student researcher will be identified and engaged in the research project.
5. Budget (one page)
Provide a description of the project budget. Recall that all funds should be used to support the student researcher. Budgets should be detailed, itemized, and justified as precisely as possible in terms of the following types of categories: travel expenses, student research assistant pay, and professional development.
All budget requests are examined carefully by the RSC reserves the right to determine the final budget. The RSC may alter the budget, (e.g., reduce the amount requested); in that event, the award will be subject to the proposer’s acceptance of the modified budget.
Include any other funding sources for the proposed project. Projects fully-funded from another source will only be considered in cases where the budget for the current award is fully allocated to supporting the student (e.g., costs for student to travel to a conference, student stipend). With suitable justification, projects which are partially funded from another source may qualify for supplemental funding with SFRC funding, but priority for funding these requests will be lower than funding requests for proposals without funding support.
6. Condensed Curriculum Vita (CV) (two pages)
The CV should emphasize research and creative work activity, highlighting more recent accomplishments and those directly related to the proposed project.
