
NURS 4450: Public Health Nursing
About the Course

NURS 4450 Public Health Nursing is taken toward the end of the RN-BSN program and is a contact hour course. Students will complete contact hours at a community site of their choice, provided it is deemed appropriate by UCCS faculty. Below is important information about the course, instructions to enroll, and a message from course faculty.
We encourage students to NOT WAIT until the last minute to complete requirements. These steps take time. Please review the deadlines below for your intended enrollment term. Please read: Important information about this course
Students living outside of Colorado must have an active, unrestricted RN license in their state before registering for NURS 4450 Public Health Nursing. All students must live in an approved state while enrolled in the RN to BSN program. Students relocating to other states must notify program administration.

Please read the following information carefully and follow the directions for each item. All requirements must be completed by the deadline stated below for your start time. If you do not complete these requirements before the deadline, you will not receive a permission number to register for this course.

Step 1: Complete Prerequisites
The following courses are prerequisites for NURS 4450:
- NURS 3040 Professional Nursing Role Development and Reflective Practice
- NURS 3070 Introduction to Informatics
- NURS 4015 Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice
- NURS 4350 Nursing Management
Step 2. Read Handbook & Submit Form
Read the Student Handbook Attestation prior to signing the Intent to Apply form.
- This signed form attests you have read the Student Handbook and that you comply with the requirements.
To complete the form, you will need to use Adobe Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader is available as a free download from Adobe.
All forms must be emailed to Debbie Schultze at dschult3@uccs.edu.
Step 3. Register for MyClinicalExchange and Upload Your Documents
- You must use your UCCS email for this.
- Read the instructions included in the attachment below to register and upload your documents.
- Be sure to choose the RN-BSN option.
- You must have all of your required immunizations, current CPT certification, current nursing license (if applicable), and health insurance uploaded into MyClinicalExchange.

Step 4. Fill Out the Clinical Site Information Sheet
Determine your community health project site and project mentor.
Contact Dr. Scott at jmarti28@uccs.edu with any questions you have about projects/sites.
Step 5. Complete Background Check
- Complete a background check through CastleBranch
- Use the package code: NV15
Please do not send your results to us, they are sent automatically to our office.
Step 6. Complete Drug Screening
- You are required to complete a 10-panel drug screen processed by CastleBranch
- Use the code: NV15dt

Step 7. Submit Photo for Student ID Badge
Email your photo to Debbie Schultze dschult3@uccs.edu. Be sure and include your current mailing address in the email to Debbie Schultze.
The picture you send to Debbie Schultze should be one that you would use to show that you are a professional nursing student:
- Submit a color head shot photo, taken in the last 6 months
- Have someone else take your photo. No selfies.
- Please use a plain background.
- Face the camera directly with full face in view.
- Wear professional clothing.
- You cannot wear a hat or head covering unless it is for religious or medical reasons.
- Do not wear headphones or earbuds.
