Focus of Study
Our unique approach features live web chat sessions for hands-on language practice, setting us apart from other interpreter courses. By actively using the language, you'll be better prepared for a successful career in medical interpreting. Plus, with mandatory live chat sessions led by an expert instructor, you'll receive the individualized attention and guidance you need to succeed.
All sessions will be held in Colorado/MST time and the schedule will be provided through an online platform.
Program Requirements
The Medical Interpreter course is designed for bilingual individuals who have fluency in both English and Spanish. This comprehensive course provides the necessary training and education to become a skilled and valued medical interpreter in the healthcare field.
Pre-assessment Evaluation
A pre-assessment evaluation is required for admission into the course.
The evaluation, conducted by an expert instructor, is a qualitative oral exam that will assess the candidate's proficiency level in Spanish. Based on the exam results, candidates may be classified by the following levels:
Basic | Less than 10 Points |
Advanced | 10 - 15 Points |
Master | 15 - 20 Points |
Candidates who are evaluated as Master level are eligible to enroll in the course. Candidates who are evaluated as Advanced may be considered on an individual basis. Candidates who are evaluated as Basic are recommended to take a beginner course, such as NURS 2470, before enrolling in the interpreter program. The final decision for admission into the class will be based on the candidate's score and the instructor's discretion.
It is important to note that fluency in both languages does not automatically qualify an individual to serve as a medical interpreter. The course does not require a degree, but participants must demonstrate a high level of fluency in both English and Spanish. The pre-assessment evaluation does not require prior knowledge of medical or technical linguistic awareness.
To request a language pre-assessment, email sclark4@uccs.edu.
