The traditional option for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program prepares students for entry-level professional nursing practice. This four-year option is designed for students who may or may not have a prior degree. Completion of first-level prerequisite courses and a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to submit an application for a clinical nursing seat.

Eligibility/Application Requirements for the Traditional BSN Option:

The application deadline for a Traditional BSN clinical nursing seat is January 1 - March 1 for the following academic year. Once selected, students will be placed to begin nursing courses.

Prerequisite Coursework: All prerequisite courses must be completed with a passing grade by end of the spring semester of application. Successful completion requires a C- or better for general education courses, and a C or better in any courses with an HPNU or NURS prefix (for example: HPNU 3050— Human Anatomy, HPNU 3060—Human Physiology, NURS 2060—Statistics for Nurses).

Minimum GPA: The cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher at the end of the Spring semester of application. GPA calculation will include all previous college coursework and courses taken at UCCS. The student’s GPA will be updated at the end of the semester to include that semester’s grades for the purpose of reviewing applicants for admission to clinicals. IMPORTANT: If a student’s cumulative GPA is less than 3.0 after the final semester update, he/she will not be considered for admission to the Nursing major, even if the entrance exam has been taken and passed. Current Active UCCS Students: Applicants must be active at UCCS and must have successfully completed at least one course at UCCS over the three semesters prior to taking the exam.

Traditional BSN Clinical Application form: The first step of the application process is to submit the Traditional BSN Clinical Application form. Students have two (2) opportunities to apply to a prelicensure BSN nursing program. The Traditional BSN Clinical Application may be withdrawn without penalty by contacting the Nursing Advisors.

 Background Check: A current background check must be completed by the application deadline according to the guidelines specified on the document that is linked on the BSN – Traditional Option web page. Results will automatically be sent to the Department of Nursing. Background checks are valid for one year.

Admission Exam: The ATI TEAS Pre-Admission Assessment Exam Review is available online. The ATI TEAS Pre-Admission Assessment Exam will primarily cover material learned during the first-year courses. Physics is not included in the exam. Consult the webpage regarding dates for the exam and the process for registering for distance testing. Follow the directions on the ATI/TEAS website for requesting accommodations. Please allow plenty of time for processing your request.

Your ATI TEAS Pre-Admission Assessment Exam scores will be accepted up to one-year (365 days) before the end of the current admission cycle. Students applying a second time must retake the ATI TEAS Pre-Admission Assessment Exam.

Limitations: If a Nursing Prep student opts to take a NURS XXXX course prior to admission to a Traditional Clinical BSN seat and earns a C- or lower, the student’s performance will be considered during the final selection process and may jeopardize the student’s standing in the application cohort.

Additional costs:
There are additional costs besides tuition that are incurred when obtaining licensure as a registered nurse.  The estimated costs below may include but are not limited to an application fee (88.00), transcripts (15.00), NCLEX exam ( 200.00) and a fingerprinting and background check (39.50).  These are estimated costs for the state of Colorado and can change at any time.  You should use this link to find the specific state BON website where you plan to apply for licensure in order to find the most current information.

Graduates of the traditional and accelerated program options in the BSN program are eligible to apply for licensure as a registered nurse in the states in which our curriculum meets the requirements for licensure.  State licensure is required for practice as a registered nurse.
