Home Health Visits

Providing comprehensive nursing care in patients' homes requires specialized skills and abilities, and opportunities for learning these skills are limited. The Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences Simulation Learning Center is used for much more than high-tech simulations of the care of hospitalized patients, it allows students to simulate home visits. Leaning the skills and ability for patient home care, Beth-El collaborated with students from Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) to conduct a home visit simulation for nursing students focused on senior care. VAPA students played the role of family members in a home environment and nursing students conducted a simulated home visit for the family of a child with asthma. This simulation allowed the students to practice the skills of home environmental assessment, family assessment, and providing targeted education to the family. This was the second time for the home visit simulation which began in the Fall term of 2013. The collaboration with VAPA began with the mental health course and has expanded to include the home visit simulations.
